'Chennai: The Split City' by Venkatesh Chakravarthy. The film attempts to capture complexities in a city by looking at people as active agents capable of making their voices heard.

Documentaries on Chennai.
'Frames of Chennai' is a project which showcases documentaries on the city of Chennai. Docus made by professionals and amateurs are screened.
Screenings take place during the annual MADRAS DAY celebrations in mid August every year.

Below are the docu-films to be screened on Aug. 23 at Alliance Francaise auditorium on College Road. From 3 p.m. onwards. Admission is free. Alliance Francaise, Chennai is a partner of this event.

NAMMA CHENNAI ; The students of Arsha Vidya Mandir in Velachery produced this film as part of the school's Madras Day project. It records their impression of the city.

CHENNAI CORPORATION ELECTION: WOMAN COUNCILLOR'S STORY : Lakshmi Suresh is a BJP member. She was a Chennai Corporation councillor representing a ward in Mylapore area. She seeks re-election in the next local election (2006) when the ward reserved for women, is dereserved. This film captures Lakshmi Suresh's campaign, in the slums as well as a posh colony in Mylapore. It also records her voice on what it means to be a city councillor, and a woman at that.

DUSK OF THE DISPLACED : In recent times, the state has been removing lots of slums that have come up on the banks of canals / rivers and on the seashore. The displaced have been 'resettled' in places like Kodungaiyur, Seemenchery and Pudunallur. But life for many is a misery. This film records the life of the displaced.

RED SYMPHONY: Achuthan Kudallur is one of India's foremost abstract painters who lives on the city's outskirts, off East Coast Road. His works have been exhibited in India and abroad. This film shares his thoughts on his work and his philosophy.

FOREVER HEBER : Madras Christian College in Tambaram started as a school in George Town in 1837 before its moved to its Tambaram campus in 1937. Its hostels, which are called Halls, are as famous as the college and its alumni. Each hall follows its own traditions. Bishop Heber Hall is one of the hostels for men. This film captures the legendary traditions its hostelites follow.

RAINBOW : The first parade by the LBGT, of gays, lesbians and others in Chennai took place on June 28, 2009 along the Marina beach. This film records this unique parade in the metro.
