Film Screening: ‘Madras Matters’ – Aug. 19, 2016

Two documentaries ‘Golden Flute’ and ‘Kamadhenu’ will be screened celebrating the city’s two well-known artists, Alphonso Arul Doss and Veera Santhanam, directed by Gita, city based painter and film-maker.
The screening will be followed by interaction with the artists.
Golden Flute

Professor Dr. Alphonso Arul Doss graduated from the Government College of Arts & Crafts, Madras in 1957 and taught painting in the same institution for many years and retired as its principal. Alphonso has been the recipient of numerous awards including the National Award in 1988. His works are part of many galleries and art collectors all over the globe. He has held several one-man shows in India, USA, Japan, Korea, Singapore and Bangkok.

Kamadhenu
Running time : 40 mts. Language – Tamil , subtitled in English 2016

Born in Kumbakonam in 1947 and trained in fine arts in the 60’s, Veera Santhanam’s paintings are highly influenced by Tamil culture and aesthetics. He is the recipient of many awards including the National Award and the President’s award. A multifaceted artist, he dons many roles as an actor, writer and social activist.

About the director:

Gita is a painter and independent film-maker based in Chennai. She has over 15 films to her credit on contemporary Indian painters. Filmography includes prominent painters of the Madras Art Movement like Rajavelu, Alphonso Arul Doss, Suriyamoorthy, Vidyashankar Sthapathy and Perumal.
