ThinkTops Madras Hunt 2012 – From Aug. 19 to 24, 2012

A six-day Online Treasure Hunt exclusively for the Madras week.
The hunt is jointly organised by Bambaram Toy Library  and YOCee .
Kids (10-16 years) who have a penchant for adventure and treasure hunt can participate as team of two.

Map Ur Way – Map making workshop / walk / competition – Aug. 26, 2012

Kalaa Manjari After School Activity Centre and Bambaram Toy Library conduct a map workshop followed by a competition for children of 12 years and above. Starts at 3 p.m. Reporting time 2.30 p.m.

Learning session on how to construct and read maps followed by a walk in a neighborhood and a presentation contest. Open to first 25 registrations only.

The Mint Food Trail – Aug. 25, 2012

The Mint Food Trail – A food trail organized by The Madras Day to discover the food delicacies of Sowcarpet in and around Mint Street.

Saturday, Aug 25, 2012 . Starts at 5 pm. Ends at 6.30 pm

Start point: Kakada Sweets, New No 348 Old No 343 (Near Jain Temple), Mint Street, Sowcarpet, Chennai – 600079.

How to get there: Reach flower bazaar police station. Turn left to join NSC Bose Road. Turn into Mint Street on right side, walk for 5 minutes and you will see Kakada Sweets on the left side.

The Walk will take you to 4/5 great North Indian Snacks joints in and around Mint Street to give you a taste of the rich food offers in this part of our city. You will also get a feel of Mint neighbourhood.

All are welcome. No Registration. But you will need to pay for the snacks you like to sample.

Note: Since this is a very crowded area, we suggest you come by auto and walk to start point.

Heritage Ride – Aug. 19, 2012

Starts at 5 a.m. From Marina Beach behind Gandhi Statue where all the vehicles can be parked,starting point and finishing point shall be the same.

The Bicycle Heritage Ride will include 10 places/points around the region of Triplicane and Mylapore:
1) Madras University Senate House + Locks of Buckingham Canal
2) Chepauk Palace
3) Sri Pathasarathy Temple and Mahakavi Subramaniya Bharathiyar House (located opposite to the Temple)
4) Ice House also called Vivekanandar House
5) Santhome Basilica
6) Pey Alvar Birthplace & Dabba Chetty Shop on Kutcheri Road
7) Sri Kapalisweerar Temple
8) Vasantha Vilas (Law Journal Building)
9) Thanni Thurai Market next to Sanskrit College
10) DGP Office on Marina Beach

All the riders should follow road/lane discipline, the roads will not be closed from traffic for this ride.
Helmets are Mandatory.

Please carry adequate water and energy/nutrition bars for the ride, this ride is totally self supported.
Please be with the group till the end of the ride.

This show is part of a private project to archive visuals and documents on everything related to the Adyar neighbourhood. The show will have about 25 photos of Adyar in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Roads, campuses, people, activities, beach front, bungalows, etc. Those who possess old Adyar pictures are welcome to share copies.

The Fort is where it all began. And all that happened here led to the formation of Madras, now Chennai. The Walk helps you explore the moat, chambers and ramparts of the Fort, landmarks like officers’ bungalows, parade ground, St Mary’s Church, Clive House and Army Barracks and take in the unique architecture and spaces inside this city within a city.  Walk is led by Vincent D Souza.

Living Statues of Marina Beach Walking Tour – Aug. 26, 2012

World Storytelling Institute is organising  5th Annual Living Statues of Marina Beach Walking Tour.
At 7:30am.
Dramatic Enactments of Historical Characters Kannagi, NSC Bose, Thiruvalluvar, George Pope, Bharathidasan, and Auvvaiyar (English and Tamil languages).

Events at SOS Children's Village, Tambaram

SOS Children’s Villages of India-Chatnath Homes in Tambaram will organise the following programs in co-ordination with schools in the area.

  1. Children (students) walk around M.C.C. Campus (of 365 acres, mostly comprising of jungles) to know the birds, fauna & flora and environment on  18th Aug 2012
  2. We invite the participation of 10 schools in Tambaram vicinity to benefit from the lectures and also in quiz and drawing competitions on 16th and 17th, Aug 2012.
  3. Trekking on Pallavaram hill on 19th Aug 2012.

This walk would also be a Gastronomic delight for many, yes we check the Kandasamy Koil, South Mint Street – Haven for snack food, Ekambareswarar Temple, Chenna Kesava Perumal & Malleshwarar Temple, the Electrical, the Gold trade pockets and end at the Rattan Bazaar Road. Obviously without mentioning the stopovers to check the Pav Bhaajis, Paani Puris, Kachodi’s in between would be a crime.

Photowalk – Aug.12, 2012

Organised by The Chennai Photowalk.

Lets walk through the maze of Attorney at laws offices’, the Kaligambal Temple, 150+ years old Muthialpet School, Mannady, Krishnan Koil, Coral Merchant Street Nagarathar Chathirams, The Lungi Merchants, Kachaleeswarar Koil, YMIA’s Gokhale Hall, Catholic Centre, St Mary’s Church & Armenian Church. Hopefully we get to see the trade starting in the morning around the places of worship and thereby a melange of colours to capture. (We could end the walk heading for a breakfast at the Cosmo Cafeteria for many and for a few at the Hot Chips and for very few at Ramakrishna Lunch Home)

Photo Exhibition: Sights and Sites of Madras – Aug. 19 to 31, 2012

The Photographic Society of Madras (PSM)was founded in 1857 by Dr. Alexander Hunter and the Honorable Walter Elliot. One of the earliest photographic societies in the world, PSM has a hallowed heritage and was established to bring together photographers and enthusiasts of various hues, to create an opportunity for learning, exchanging ideas, appreciation of the art, exposition of the science, having fun travelling and exploring together.
In its long years of existence, PSM has had members who have been, were and are some of the finest photographers and cinematographers in South India.
This exhibition will have 50  photos on display.
