Walk: Mercantile Mylapore – Aug. 24, 2019

The Mylapore port was as much a centre of trade as the Mamallapuram port under the Pallavas. In a much later age, retail trade in Mylapore thrived and continues to, in all the streets around the temple and extending further.

Madras Inherited which works in the field of heritage, is hosting a paid Heritage Walk on August 24, 2019; the guide will take guests along the length of Kutchery Road, discovering the trading establishments that existed and still exist or, in the case of quite a few, have taken a completely different form today. From places that sold Madras Curry powder that was used in the Buckingham Palace, the market that sold goods carried in a boat via the Buckingham Canal and the green lung of the area that was once a pond, among others.

The walk ends at Spirit of the Earth on Desika Road where a healthy breakfast will be served!

For Kids: Explore Railway Museum – Aug. 25, 2019

This Walk exclusively for kids aged 5-12 by Marco photographer Railway Historian Poochi Venkat will expose them to steam engines, vintage coaches, and models manufactured by North British Locomotive Company.

Western Classical Music Concert – Aug. 25, 2019

The Western Classical Music Recital will be conducted by Madras Inherited in collaboration with The Madras Musical Association, as an avenue to explore the rich history behind the genre of music, as well as experience it in a building of historic significance. Photo Exhibition: Display of winning entries of Shoot Madras Contest – Aug. 23 to 25, 2019

Photographic Society of Madras, coinciding with the Madras Day Celebration, conducted its Annual Photographic Contest “Shoot Madras 2019”.

The contest closed on August 15, 2019.

The winning entries will be displayed at Tanishq, Anna Nagar from August 23-25, 2019 – 12 noon to 8 pm on all days.

The Valedictory function will be held on August 25, 2019, at 6.30 pm.

Mr Venkatesh Ramakrishnan, Author and Historian will be the Chief Guest for the evening

Walk: திராவிட இயக்க இதழியல் – வரலாற்று நடை – Aug. 24, 2019

பேசி வளர்ந்த இயக்கம் என்று திராவிட இயக்கத்தின் மீதொரு பார்வை உண்டு. அது பாராட்டோ, விமர்சனமோ… உண்மையில் பேசியும், பேச வைத்தும், எழுதியும் எழுத வைத்தும் வளர்ந்த இயக்கம் தான் திராவிட இயக்கம். தென்னிந்திய நல உரிமைச் சங்கம் நடத்திய Justice என்ற ஏட்டின் பெயரால் தான் அவ்வியக்கமே மக்களால் Justice Party என்று வழங்கப்பட்டது. அதன் தொடர்ச்சியாக, தந்தை பெரியார், அறிஞர் அண்ணா தொடங்கி திராவிட இயக்கத்திலிருந்து ஏராளமானோர் இதழ்கள் நடத்தினர். சென்னையின் வரலாற்றிலும், வளர்ச்சியிலும் திராவிட இயக்கங்களைப் போலவே, திராவிட இயக்க இதழ்களுக்கும் ஒரு பங்கு உண்டு. அவற்றில் சில இடங்களையும், சில தடங்களையும் காணும் வாய்ப்பை உருவாக்குகிறது இந்த நடை.

Release of Special Postal Cover – Aug. 22, 2019

Dept. of Lighthouses under Ministry of Shipping is releasing a SPECIAL POSTAL COVER to mark 175 years of Chennai/Madras’ 2nd Light House, now located inside the Madras High Court campus.
