Heritage Walk: Madrasin Pengal – Aug. 20, 2022

Women and their contributions have largely played a negligible role in historical narratives, their absence speaking louder than their presence. Their lives rarely see the volume of celebrations that men do or the widespread commemoration that one observes of male personalities. The city of Chennai a.k.a Madras has seen some remarkable women who were active and influential across fields of politics, education, health, science, arts, sports, and administration. These women were pioneers in their field; their unrelenting activism, fiery speeches, and decisions played a vital role in shaping society as we know it today.

The Equals Project and Madras Inherited set out on a quest to understand the lives of women in Madras, and that journey has brought us to this heritage walk, which aims to recognise the contributions and accomplishments of these women while also initiating dialogue and discussions on concepts like bias and perception, class and caste privileges, and recognition and remembrance.

Brief Intro:
The walk is to find out how Madras was created by the British. The traces could be found in Pulicat, where the British were fighting to settle down to trade. Before 1639, the British had their trading post in Armagon (Durgarajapattinam) northern end of Pulicat Lagoon. Pulicat Lagoon was the most favourable location to anchor large wooden ships and travel into the hinterlands where cotton was woven into fine clothes. In 1502, the Portuguese landed at Pazhaverakadu and established their trade links with the Vijayanagara Kingdom. Followed by them, the Dutch arrived in 1602AD forming the East India Company. After seeing the rise in power and money of the Dutch and Portuguese, the British and French followed to settle on the Coromandel Coast.

Walk: திருவொற்றியூரும் திருப்பாட்டும் – Aug. 15, 2022

The Thiruvotriyur temple of the Thiyagarajaswamy temple is one of the paadal-petra stalams in Madras, and the temple is a vast historical and archaeological trove. Numerous Saivite saints have been associated with this temple but have a close link to Sundaramurthi Nayanar’s life history.
As a part of Madras day walks, Shri. Thiruchitrambalam, Professor Tiruvavaduthurai Aadheenam will lead us to show the ancient musical heritage of Odhuvars and the thirupathigams associated with this ancient temple. The focus is on Sundaramurthi Nayanar’s seventh thirumurai called the “Thirupattu”
The Thevaram verses, with their historic and socio-cultural references, are valuable not just as history but as components of an important intangible cultural heritage.

And Thiruchitrambalam represents the continuity of such a heritage, join the walk on Aug 15th (8 am – 10 am) from the temple gopuram.
Reg fee 500/- No refunds on cancellation, please note.
