Cultural mapping of Cooum and Adyar rivers – August 13, 2017

South India Heritage Programme and Tag Centre organise a talk to honour our city with an event that focuses on two of the city’s famous rivers – the Cooum and Adyar.

Mr Venkatesh Ramakrishnan, novelist and historian, will give us facts, anecdotes and historical snippets about the Cooum and the Adyar rivers.

Shoot Madras – Photography Contest – Last Date: Aug. 10, 2017

Photographic Society Of Madras (PSM) is holding a photography contest to celebrate Madras Week.
There are three themes to choose from.

My Madras: The photos depicting what it means personally to the photographer. Including typical Chennai views like monuments, beaches, city life, cityscapes, scenes against which day-to-day life is Chennai plays out

Only in Madras: Scenes which are unique to Madras

Evolving Madras: Shift from the ancient to the old to modern

Eyes of Madras – Photo Exhibition of The Chennai Photowalk Group – August 18, 19 & 20, 2017

To commemorate the 10th year of The Chennai Photowalk Group and to coincide with the Madras Week Celebrations, CPW is conducting a Photo Exhibition titled ‘Eyes of Madras’. On August 18-20, 2017
At C P Art Centre, Mini Gallery, Eldams Road, Teynampet, Chennai 600 018.

The theme of the Exhibition is “Essence of Madras”. Photographs, numbering about 100, taken by the Chennai Photowalkers in and around Chennai during the Photowalks will be displayed.

The exhibition will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Walk through West Mambalam – August 12, 2017

Padmapriya Baskaran, heritage blogger and researcher and Aalayam Kanden Trust will be curating a walk that traces a heritage trail through West Mambalam.

On 12th of August from 7 to 8.30 am.

The walk will originate at the Madeley Subway, and go along the Kothandaramar Temple, Ahobila Mutt Oriental School, the Mambalam Agraharam, Srinivasa Theatre, Kasi Viswanathar Temple, the Sankara Mutt Goshala, Public Health Centre and the Madras Kali Bari,

The Arcot Nawabs trail at Triplicane – Aug. 20, 2017

The Nawabs of Arcot moved to Madras in the 1760’s and built their palace at Chepauk, thereby influencing the development around that area. Beginning from the Chepauk Palace, the walk takes you through the various monuments in and around Triplicane area associated with the Walajahi Nawabs.

Justice Party Heritage Walk – Thyagaraya Nagar (T Nagar) – Aug. 19, 2017

Thyagaraya Nagar, popularly known by its abbreviated form T. Nagar was created as an urban suburb of Madras during the 1920’s by the Madras Presidency government led by Raja of Panagal of the Justice Party. The town was named after Justice Party leader Sir Pitti Theagaraya Chetty, while the streets, parks and localities in the new neighbourhood were named after important members of the Justice party like Raja of Panagal, Natesan, Sir Muhammad Usman, etc… The Justice Party Heritage walk of Thyagaraya Nagar takes you around the roads and streets of T Nagar as well as the history behind it.

Heritage of Chennai:Multimedia Presentation Contest for Schools

This contest is held in connection with Madras Day 2017 which celebrates our city. The contest encourages city school students to explore Chennai’s heritage and present the topic given to you in multimedia form. This contest has been held for 14 years.

This year’s theme of the contest is Old Markets of the city.

Choose a unique market in the city which has its own history. Study the streetscape, the local architecture, the nature of business and the striking features of this place. Take classy photos, make notes, talk to people in the know.

Here are some markets that are unique – Koyambedu Vegetable Market, Second-hand auto parts in Pudupet, Dry Fish in Basin Bridge, Fresh Fish market in Redhills and Chintadripet, Temple umbrellas and garlands in Chintadripet, Old books located where Moore Market stood once …

The contest-presentation need not be submitted to the organisers. But ask your teacher – adviser to seek the approval of your theme by emailing to themadrasday@gmail.com before you start working on the project.

The contest will be held on August 22, 2017, from 9.30 a.m. to 3.30 p.m.

Essay competition for Senior Citizens : Last date – July 30, 2017

The Senior Citizens Group of Besantnagar (SCGOBN) announces an essay competition for Senior Citizens to coincide with Madras Day.

The topic is – What relevance does Madras Day have for me in my twilight years?

The competition is open to all senior citizens all over India .
Participation is free. Entries to be sent by e mail only to scgobn@gmail.com in word format.
Word limit is 1000 words. Last date is 30th July 2017.

The essays would be evaluated by a panel of retired bureaucrats, corporate executives, professors and social workers.Ten best entries will be selected for ten prizes.Prizes would be awarded at a public function during Madras Week.

SCGOBN is a social service group of sr citizens (avarage age 70) who share Gandhian values of truth, honesty, ahimsa, compassion, simple living and high thinking.
