The city of Chennai is home to a wide range of traditional games that have been played here for many many years. The temples and monuments are home to numerous boards inscribed on the floors – boards native to Chennai and those that have travelled here through cultural exchange with neighbouring states and some that even seem to indicate an exchange with other countries. The talk will explore some of these games and the influences that perhaps played a role in making them a part of Chennai. Participants will be able to play some of these games after the talk.

To commemorate the architectural history of Madras, Ashvita Foundation will host a presentation on the built-up heritage edifices of Mylapore and Royapettah. This event will mark the culmination of the first phase of the Vanishing Heritage Project.
The Vanishing Heritage Project is an Ashvita Foundation initiative to document the extant heritage structures of Royapettah and Mylapore. This Madras week we present the culmination of phase-1 of the visual documentation done by our research teams in a step towards protection, conservation and rehabilitation of tangible (particularly built) heritage.

The Nawabs of Arcot moved to Madras in the 1760’s and built their palace at Chepauk, thereby influencing the development around that area. Beginning from the Chepauk Palace, the walk takes you through the various monuments in and around Triplicane area associated with the Walajahi Nawabs.

Thyagaraya Nagar, popularly known by its abbreviated form T. Nagar was created as an urban suburb of Madras during the 1920’s by the Madras Presidency government led by Raja of Panagal of the Justice Party. This year’s theme of the contest is Old Markets of the city.
Choose a unique market in the city which has its own history. Study the streetscape, the local architecture, the nature of business and the striking features of this place. Take classy photos, make notes, talk to people in the know.
