Essay competition for Senior Citizens : Last date – July 30, 2017

The Senior Citizens Group of Besantnagar (SCGOBN) announces an essay competition for Senior Citizens to coincide with Madras Day.

The topic is – What relevance does Madras Day have for me in my twilight years?

The competition is open to all senior citizens all over India .
Participation is free. Entries to be sent by e mail only to scgobn@gmail.com in word format.
Word limit is 1000 words. Last date is 30th July 2017.

The essays would be evaluated by a panel of retired bureaucrats, corporate executives, professors and social workers.Ten best entries will be selected for ten prizes.Prizes would be awarded at a public function during Madras Week.

SCGOBN is a social service group of sr citizens (avarage age 70) who share Gandhian values of truth, honesty, ahimsa, compassion, simple living and high thinking.

Contest: Make your own Social History Album / Scrap Book – Aug. 19, 2017

Start with a 4 generation family tree (minimum), add pictures, plan of your house (before and now), write stories, add function invitations, postcards, sketches etc – and how your family moved to Annanaga. When? How? Why? How your family history is related to Annanagar.

Chennai T-Shirt Design Contest – Last date: July 9, 2017

Design a T-Shirt for Chennai. The contest is open to all. The entries should reflect the spirit and uniqueness of Chennai.

Entries should be submitted as a JPG or PDF file and to be emailed to – themadrasday@gmail.com.
CDs with the design can also be mailed to Madras Day, C/o. Mylapore Times, 77, C.P. Ramaswamy Road, Alwarpet, Chennai 600018

Apart from cash prizes for the best three entries, the best designer will be invited to improvise the design for Chennai T-Shirt 2017.

Madras Divya Desa Darshanam – musical discourse – Aug. 22, 2016

Organised by Triplicane Cultural Academy.

This episode will feature Temples in and around Chennai – in connection with Madras Week – with commentary by Dr. Sudha Seshayyan and musical support by Smt. Vasundhra Rajagopal. Smt. Usha Rajagopalan and Sri. Ganapathiraman will accompany on the Violin and Mridangam respectively.

Marrying into Madras — a panel discussion – Aug. 23, 2016

Four Chennai expats will discuss the joys, challenges and experiences of marrying a Chennai-ite. They are:

1. Deborah Thyagarajan ( American and art historian. Her husband, the late Mr. Thiagarajan, a businessman.)

2. Miri Vasu from south Korea (she is into hospitality management, her husband P G Vasudeva or Vasu is in the hotel business in Chennai);

3. Shannon Zirkle-Prabhakar, an American photographer, wife of Chennai businessman Rohan Prabhakar

4. Peter Claridge from the UK, businessman and writer, author of the book “Chennai Expat Guide”. Wife: Swapnil Midha, a Punjabi who has lived in Chennai all her life, a marketing and copywriting consultant.

Moderator of the panel discussion: Nina John, a former District Governor of Toastmasters International, an entrepreneur and a business mentor.

Heritage Tour of Fort St George – Aug. 21, 2016
