Film Screening: Gudiyam Caves – Documentary in English – Aug. 21, 2016

The Gudiyam rock shelters located in Thiruvallur district where Stone Age people and their culture thrived many thousands of years ago. This documentary reveals some surprising facts about the archaeological findings and geological formation of this rock shelters. Attention is drawn through this documentary on Gudiyam Rock Shelters starting from 19th century to the recent developments.

Robert Bruce Foote, father of Indian prehistory, found a stone axe accidentally in Pallavaram (Chennai) in 1863. That was the beginning of Indian prehistory search journey.

Ramesh Yanthra created a documentary on Gudiyam Rock shelter (http://gudiyamcaves.in/) in 2015 and screened it in CANNES FLIM Festival in 2015.

Heritage Walk: The City and its Cinema – August 13, 2016

An introduction to the fascinating history of cinema in Chennai followed by a walk across Prasad Studios and Prasad Labs. This walk will offer a unique opportunity to see what an actual studio floor looks like.

Heritage walk: Kapaleeshwarar temple, Mylapore – Aug. 28, 2016

History, Art, Architecture and Traditional Games by Dr Chithra Madhavan, historian with Vinita Sidhartha of Kreeda.
Between 6.30 a.m. and 8.30 a.m. A fee of Rs.300/- per person will be charged for this tour.

During this session, Vinita Sidhartha from Kreeda will talk about the games and their link to life as we know it today. A history of the games, our learning from them will all be covered. Those who attend will be encouraged to find the boards when they visit the temple.

The Speaking Groves – A talk on Sterling Road and its vicinity – Aug. 23, 2 016

Speakers: Saranya Narayan and Usha Kumar
Time: Between 4 and 6 p.m.
The focus is on a sliver of Chennai which still breathes Madras and remains almost the epicentre of the city. The speakers would unravel the heritage of the tree laden avenue known as Sterling Road which leads to Tank Bund Road and further to Nungambakkam Railway station and beyond. People, institutions and memories will be the fodder for this presentation.

Saranya Narayan and Usha Kumar have been residents of the area for over fifty years and friends and school mates for almost the same number of years.

Usha is a partner in one of the City’s reputed travel agencies, Magellan Travel Services (P) Ltd. and is a history buff, a blogger of sorts, a quiz enthusiast and a keen observer of the world around.

Saranya is a Doctor by profession and is a Co-founder and Medical Director of Jeevan Blood Bank and Stem Cell Bank. Her other interests are travelling with a bucket list that seems to be ever expanding, experimenting with new recipes, reading and writing.
