Heritage quiz for school children – August 18, 2017

The quiz is an annual feature and a rolling trophy will be presented to the winning team along with other exciting prizes. The quiz will include various topics on General Knowledge, Heritage & Culture, Current affairs, identifying the artifacts etc. There will also be audio-video and buzzer round.
The program is open to students of 6th, 7th and 8th Standards from Matriculation, CBSE and ICSE schools.
There is no participation fee for the Quiz.

Tour: Integral Coach Factory (ICF) Perambur – August 22, 2017

A tour of the important locations at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Perambur, including the Chennai Rail Museum where an art camp for students will be conducted.
Twelve Students of Interior Design & Decor JBAS College for Women will participate in the Madras Day Art camp at the venue.

Tour of the Arms and Weapons Gallery – August 20, 2017

Two Wars and a Mutiny.
The two bronze bells in the Arms and Weapons Gallery seem out of place at first. But when you “look” closer an uncanny link between the Opium Wars in China and the Anglo-Mysore wars and the Sepoy Mutiny in India emerge. This walk will help explore this link while also admiring the fine collection of arms and weapons in the gallery.

Meeting Point: Outside the Arms and Weapons Gallery, Government Museum, Egmore

Accessibility: There are steps at the gallery entrance, while rest of the gallery has an even surface. A ramp will be available to make the entrance accessible for wheelchair users.

History of the Madras Museum – Neighbours Envy, Owners Pride – Inclusive Walk – August 20, 2017

The tremendous response from locals on seeing a Cheetah and a Tiger in the Museum grounds, part of an experiment to increase visitor traffic, led to the Museum setting up a Zoological garden with over 300 animals on its premises. This was one of many experiments to be conducted at the Museum. This walk will look at the fascinating history of the Madras Museum and why its collections truly are our city’s pride.

Talk and Dine – August19, 2017

Ninan’s restaurant in the YMCA complex in George Towne ( opposite the Madras High Court) is in its 61st year. It is witness to the city’s changing social life and food and catering business. This Madras Day, it celebrates its place in the city’s food map.
Owner Alexander Ninan, son of the founder will talk to guests and then offer them a buffet for lunch.

The heritage of IIT Madras – August 20, 2017

The Heritage Centre at IIT Madras is hosting a guided walk inside the IIT Madras campus.

Guests will participate in an hour-long guided nature walk inside the IIT Madras, after which they will be taken through the Heritage Centre of the institute.
Participants will get to see multiple aspects of IIT’s heritage, including the natural wealth of its campus, the history of the institute, the cultural accomplishments of the students and the achievements of distinguished alumni. Guests will be guided by students, alumni and faculty members.
The walk involves light physical exertion.

Time — 7 am to 9 am
Number of guests — 20 maximum

For children: A day at Fort St. George – Aug. 20, 2017

YOCee is organising an event ‘A Day at Fort St. George’ for children in association with The Archaeological Survey of India on August 20, 2017. From 9.30 a.m. to 12 noon.

The event will have a short guided walk inside Fort St. George Children to know about the buildings and monuments and stories behind them. This will be followed by a Spot on Mapping session and a quizzing session.

The event is open to children studying in class 5 to 12. Limited to 30 children and registration is mandatory. Participants need to carry a photo ID or School ID card.
No fee is charged.

An Eye on The Island – A Heritage Walk – August 27, 2017

Not many people in Chennai realise that as drive towards the Munro Statue from Mount Road, they are entering an island. The Island is home to at least four historic cemeteries, some famed bridges, a storied statue, and much more, besides affording some great views of historic monuments of our city. Come join Sriram V on a tour of the Island, on August 27, 2017 at 6.00 am. It will start from the Madras Gymkhana Club.

The walk will end at 8.30 am, followed by breakfast.

Living Statues of Marina Beach – Walking tour – August 27, 2017

Chennai Storytelling Association presents The 10th Annual “Living Statues of Marina Beach” Walking Tour. An event in Madras Week 2017.

Day: Sunday 27 Aug 2017.

Time: 7:30am (completing at 8:30am).

Please meet at the Kannagi Statue,
on Marina Beach, at Bharathi Salai.

Admission: Free.

Event format:
Performers and audience members would walk to the following statues,
1) Kannagi.
2) NSC Bose.
3) Thiruvalluvar.
4) George U Pope.
5) Bharathidasan.
6) Avvaiyar.

At each statue, there would be brief enactments — in Tamil, and then in English. For example, “I am Kannagi, and this is my story … “.

Talk: Whispering Pictures, Drawing Words – August 12, 2017

Talk by Parvathi Nayar
Hosted by Madras Literary Society

A picture may be worth 1,000 words, but often it’s 1,000 words that have inspired the picture. There are fun and provocative points of intersection and departure between drawn images and written text. Contemporary visual artist Parvathi Nayar discusses the relationship between words and artworks in her own oeuvre and in the world of contemporary art.

Parvathi Nayar is a contemporary visual artist based in Chennai. She is known for her complex drawings, installations and video work. She was part of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale (2014-2015) an international exhibition of Contemporary Art held in Kochi, Kerala. Public installations of her work include A Story of Flight, (Jai He art programme, T2 Terminal, Mumbai airport) and The Music of the Spheres (Chennai Mathematical Institute, 2016). Solos include Haunted by Waters (2017, Chennai), Dissonant Images: Drawing in Time, (2016, New Delhi), The Ambiguity of Landscapes (2014, Chennai), I sing the body electric (2008, Mumbai), Win Lose Draw (2007, Singapore) and Drawing is a Verb (Singapore, 2006).
She is a creative writer, a poet, and has written on aspects of contemporary creativity such as literature and theatre.

A fee of Rs. 50/- will be charged from non-members. This fee will be used to cover expenses incurred for organising the event and any surplus will be pooled into the book restoration fund.
