Heritage Visit to St. Thomas English Church – Aug. 15, 2018

From 4.30 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Led by Fabiola Jacob.

St. Thomas English Church (STEC) is the oldest Protestant church in Santhome. Built and consecrated in 1842 at a time when the area had a fairly large number of European residents, this was the church of the Protestant elite who lived in the garden-houses of Adyar, and the Governor of Madras often worshipped here. Today, STEC is an active Anglican Church under the ‘Church of South India’, with a vibrant congregation.

The Church’s single manual pipe organ is currently the second oldest in Chennai city and is still in excellent working condition. It was built by Thomas Robson of UK and installed at St. Thomas English Church in 1868, though some sources date it much earlier.
