Fort St. George Walk – Aug. 21, 2011

This is where it all began for Madras. Most of what came to be the Fort remains – the moats, ramparts, St Mary’s Church, neighbourhoods, bungalows . . .This tour brings you face to face with these places and shares stories of centuries gone by.

The walk is led by Vincent D Souza.

Starts at 8am. Lasts for 90mins. Assemble in parking lot opp. main gate of Fort at 7.45 am. Carry ID cards – this is a security zone. Carry water, light snacks.
Ends at Fort Museum ( those who wish to visit the museum may do so on their own – it opens at 10am). Walk is free. Register at themadrasday@gmail.com

Exhibition of paintings and photographs – Aug. 20, 2011 to Aug. 28, 2011

At C.P. Ramaswamy Aiyar Foundation, Eldams Road, Alwarpet.
Inauguration of Madras Week by Prof M. S. Swaminathan with an exhibition of paintings by A. Ananda Kumar and photographs by the late M. K. Rangaswamy Aiyangar of Madras and its environment.
Kumar graduated from the Government College of Fine Arts, Chennai, in 2011 and is the first degree holder in Fine Arts from his village Koralpakkam in Thiruvannamalai District.

Aiyangar was an eminent photographer of the early 20th century. A scholar of art, culture, religion and music, he wrote many articles on the subjects in leading dailies like The Hindu, Indian Express and the weeklies and magazines of his times. He authored several books, among which Thyagaraja Thatvam and Mahabalipuram – A Guide Book with illustrations of photographs taken by him are noteworthy.

Meandering down Mint Street – Aug. 28, 2011

Starts at 6.30 a.m.

One of the longest streets in the whole world according to some, this is one of the oldest thoroughfares of Madras. Come and see what makes it an area buzzing with life and a melting pot of several communities.

This is a tour by foot and will last two hours. The tour will be conducted by Sriram V, Associate Editor of Madras Musings and will conclude with breakfast.

The Magnates of Mount Road – Aug. 27, 2011

Starts at 6 a.m.

A tour by van and foot for two and a half hours on how Mount Road developed as a downtown for the city with newspapers, jewellers, cinema theatres, restaurants and business houses making it their home.

The tour will be conducted by Sriram V, Associate Editor of Madras Musings. The tour will conclude with breakfast.

The Studios of Kollywood – Aug. 21, 2011

Starts at 6.30 a.m.

A tour by van and foot for two hours in Kodambakkam and Vadapalani, looking at some of the great studios in the world of South Indian films. Tour includes going into studios as well.

The tour will be conducted by Mohan V Raman, veteran film and TV actor, who has been devoting hours of study into the history of Tamil films and speaks frequently on the subject. The tour will conclude with breakfast.
