Alliance Française of Madras (AFM) is holding a photography contest during the Madras Week 2016.
This contest is open to all residents of the city.
Theme : Madras Yesterday… Chennai Today
Pertaining to the theme, participants can send in their photo entries that depict what the city of Chennai means to them. Photographs may include typical views of the life in the city, cityscape, culture, tradition, day to day life, festivals, nature, wildlife and capturing the magnificence of the city’s architecture from the oldest arch to the modern structures.
Entries to be sent to communication@af-madras.org and must reach us before 12 Noon on 5th August.
20 entries will be picked by a select Jury and an exhibition of the winning entries will be held at the AFM Gallery from August 22 – 28, 2016.
Rules & Regulations :
Submission :
1. One participant can send a maximum of two pictures.
2. Entries will not be accepted on CD or as prints.
3. Each entry should be accompanied by the following data sheet duly filled in.
Image size :
– Each participant shall submit their photos in TIFF file format (preferred) or JPEG format (as an alternative) with a resolution of 300 dpi.
– Any manipulation or modification to the original image is limited to minor retouching of blemishes and cropping and must not alter the content of the original scene. Highly manipulated images and composite images including HDRs are not permitted. Monochrome images are allowed.
Qualification :
– Entry is open to all photographers – amateur and professionals.
Copyright :
– The original image(s) must have been taken using a photographic process and all entrants must have the sole copyright to each image they submit. Clip Art and Copyright Free material are not acceptable. Alliance Française of Madras assume no responsibility for misuse by anyone of the copyright of published images.
Compliance :
– The organisers may reject any entry/image at their discretion. An entry may be rejected if it does not conform to published competition rules or is deemed unsuitable. The entries have to be original work of the entrant, who owns them. The entrants may be asked to provide the original for verification. An entrant failing to provide a requested image file may, at the organisers’ discretion, be considered to be in contravention of the contest rules and will be disqualified.
Notifications :
– Notification of results will be sent by email. Entrants should ensure that they provide an active email address and that spam filters are set to accept emails from AFM. Notifications will not be sent by post.

The Government Museum established in 1851 has one of India’s finest collections of sculptures that span several centuries.
The 45 min walk will focus on select stone sculptures from Tamil Nadu in the ground floor of the main gallery. A short Bharathiyar song will be sung by the children of the Madras Youth Choir. The song will appropriately connect to how these artifacts showcase our cultural pride and deserve to be in our country.
The participants will learn the context of the sculptures and learn how to tell which period they belong to (and you will have a practice test at the end where you score your own test!!) and what you can learn from the sculptures for our own lives today.
Madras Youth Choir is the oldest Indian Choral Group and has been recognised by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi for its untiring efforts to propagate the message of social unity through musical harmony. With a rich repertoire of over a hundred songs in various Indian languages that seamlessly straddle classical, semi-classical, and light and folk music genres, the MYC has performed at prestigious music festivals all over India

A landmark on the Vadagu Peruvazhi (as the ECR was known in Chola times), Tiruvanmiyur. Marundeswarar Temple is a great place in Madras to understand the work of the Shaivaite saints in reconverting Tamilians in the Chola times to Hinduism from Jainism and Buddhism. The 30min walk will explore the sadly modernized temple and understand how religion and politics mingled for mutual benefit in the 6-9th centuries.
After the 30min walk, we play games in the temple! For years now Kreeda has been involved in documenting the Graffiti Games carved in temples and old monuments. Kreeda has found two game boards carved on the floor of this temple. One is the more popular Aadu Puli Aatam, while the other is a board that has not been seen elsewhere. While it bears a certain semblance to other game boards one cannot be completely sure if this is the same game or a different one. Kreeda has been researching this game and has put together three sets of optional rules to play the game.

DETAILS OF CONTEST
This contest is held in connection with MADRAS DAY 2016 (Aug. 22 is celebrated as Madras Day) which celebrates our city. The contest encourages city school students to explore Chennai’s heritage and present the topic given to you in multi-media form. This contest has been held for the past 13 years.
THEME: STREETSCAPE OF ANY OLD PART OF CITY
GUIDELINES: We want you to choose a street in an old sector of our city which has old houses and buildings (at least 10 of them on either side). Study the streetscape, the local architecture, the nature of houses and residents and the striking features of this street. Take classy photos, make notes, talk to people in the know.
>> The contest is open to school children studying in classes 8 to 12.
>> A school can send only one team. Each team MUST have 3 members and all 3 members must take turns to make one presentation.
MORE GUIDELINES:
1. Identify a street that goes back in time – 1930s-60s for your study. Make sure the street has great old features. Ask your school teacher-adviser to seek the approval of the organisers. E-mail to – themadrasday@gmail.com – and get the OK to start work on the project.
2. Do street-based research, undertake a tour of the place to take pictures on the spot, notes and interview people who can give you more inputs. Take photos and videos – use them in your project. We look for multi-media rich projects.
3. Back at your desk put the project together with pictures and the main points in the Power Point presentation capsule and explanation notes written on sheets of paper. (On each slide, you must have a maximum of just 3 lines, each line 5 words only. Dumping content on a slide earns you minus marks!).
4. At the contest venue, your team of 3 students will take turns at the mike to present the project using the PP. You can use your notes for reference as your speak.
5. The presentation in PowerPoint on the approved theme will have to be done by all the three participants. It can be done in English or in Thamizh or a mix!
6. The duration of the complete presentation – PowerPoint and Oral – should not exceed 10 minutes. Participants should be prepared to answer on-the-spot questions from the judges.
7. The PowerPoint presentation should be submitted to the organisers on or before Aug. 12, 5 pm.

8. The team should retain a copy of your project on a pen-drive or copy it to an electronic device and bring it to the venue of the contest. The organiser will provide a PC and a projector at the venue to help you make your presentation.
9. The Contest is open to first 25 teams to register on first-come-first-serve basis.
10. The contest will take place on Aug.23 from 9.30 am to 3.30 pm with a 30 mins. Lunch break (you need to bring your lunch!). Venue: Srinivasa Sastri Hall, Luz, Mylapore. (Report at 9 am to download your PP onto our PC)
11. The best THREE presentations will be awarded TROPHIES, gifts and certificates. All participants will be given certificates. The prizes will be given at about 3 pm.
12. Prizes will be awarded based on quality of research / presentation of visuals and points / presentation format and answers to the questions posed by the judges.

“Chennaiyin Gnanaratham” – a danceversation, is a tribute to arguably the greatest genius who lived in the city of Chennai – MahaKavi Subramania Bharathi. It is a combination of folk dance performance and conversation on Bharathiyar’s days in Chennai. Some of the inspiring songs of Bharathi have been specially choreographed using ‘Devarattam’ movements. The dance will be performed by the “’The Folk Repertory’”, a group of amateur artists with passion for folk arts of Southern Tamil Nadu. The narrative delivered in a conversational style, similar to theatre, will include events and places associated with the MahaKavi’s life in Chennai.
