The author, S. Muthiah will also share his experiences in writing the book.

One of Chennai’s treasure trove ‘The Madras Literary Society’ Public Library in DPI complex, Nungambakkam is going to be the venue for a very interesting ‘Knowing your library storytelling and narrative workshop’ for children aged between 3 – 12 years.

Talk – Madras in the 1860s – Rare Photos from the College of Arts – Aug. 16, 2018

In a long line of firsts, is one for photography. Within a few years of photography being invented, Madras was probably the first in Asia where it was formally taught as a subject. The 45min talk will screen some of the rare images and the monuments with some stories around them.

Speaker – Behaviourist Pradeep Chakravarthy looks at history to understand why people behave the way they do today. Currently working on his PhD, he does workshops for corporates and has written several books and articles on Tamil Nadu and Madras’s history.

At 5:30PM in IC&SR auditorium, IIT Madras campus.

Museum Launch – Aug. 15, 2018

Madras Heritage Museum, a private centre curated and promoted by D. Hemchandra Rao will be launched at Virugambakkam. The place displays photos, coins, postage stamps and covers, maps, models and vintage objects on – Buckingham Canal, Light Houses and ‘red’ landmark buildings.

Historian-philatelist D. Hemchandra Rao repeats this tour of the Canal. The tour takes people to a few points on the Canal that was a key transport channel for the city as Rao presents snappy milestones of this Canal.
The tour has stops at the Central Station zone and Madras University, besides a walkaround the Basin Bridge area, to give you a closer look at key functions of this Canal in years gone by.
Starts at 7.30 a.m. Duration: 2 hours. Tour is by van and on foot.

Photowalk for children – Walk by the Village Road – Aug. 22, 2018

Yocee (http://yocee.in) conducts its 10th annual Madras Day photowalk for children on Aug. 22, 2018.

From 4 p.m. to 5.30 p.m.

In the not-so-distant past, Valluvarkottam High Road was called Village Road. For much of its length, it runs along the old village of Nungambakkam. Of that village, there is no trace until you come to a small Shiva temple with a large tank fronting it. Standing there, it is just about possible to imagine Nungambakkam’s rural past.

This Madras Week, we shall do a circular route from Valluvar Kottam and walk down Village road into the crowded, colourful and pretty ancient Nungambakkam Market and shoot all that is about this ‘village’ in the city.

Film Screening – An American in Madras (Documentary) – Aug. 22, 2018

The film will be introduced by Mr. Mohan Raman, actor and film historian, who is featured in the documentary (80 mins/2013)

Synopsis: The documentary traces American born filmmaker Ellis R. Dungan’s years in India as a celebrated director in the Tamil film industry from 1935-50.

Walk : Amaravati Gallery, Egmore Museum – Aug 5, 2018

Organized by Tamil Heritage Trust (www.tamilheritage.in)

The Amaravati gallery is one of the great treasures of the Madras Museum in Egmore. Sculptures, pillars, and fragments of a Buddhist stupa dating back to the 2nd century BC, from an abandoned city of the Satavahana era, were brought to this museum in the middle of the 19th century. The art of Amaravati is the earliest lithic work of any significance in the southern part of the Indian peninsula, and the panels in Egmore Museum are among the finest examples of Buddhist art.

The walk will be curated by Gopu R and Kishore Mahadevan, and will cover selected panels from the Amaravati Gallery.

Time : 11 a.m – 12 p.m

The walk is free. Participants need to purchase entry tickets and assemble at parking area (near ticket counter) at 10:45 a.m.

The Amaravati gallery is one of the great treasures of the Madras Museum in Egmore.
